Katsuhiro Ōtomo’s landmark cyberpunk anime Akira has made a powerful return to the big screen, earning an estimated US$3,175,000 during its opening holiday weekend in the United States, according to Box Office Mojo. The film screened from Friday through Monday over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

4K and IMAX Presentation
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment launched the re-release in select theaters across the United States and Canada on Friday, September 5, presenting the film in both 4K and IMAX formats. Audiences can choose between the original Japanese audio with English subtitles or an English dub.
Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of a post-World War III Tokyo in 2019, Akira follows Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang, whose friend Tetsuo is injured in a crash after encountering a mysterious boy — the product of secret government experimentation. When the military whisks both Tetsuo and the boy away to a research facility, Kaneda infiltrates the lab to rescue his friend, only to discover that the extreme experiments have unleashed a terrifying new power within Tetsuo, driving him toward madness.
About Director Katsuhiro Ōtomo
Ōtomo began his career as a manga artist with works including Domu, Kibun wa mō Sensō, and the internationally celebrated Akira. He transitioned into animation by co-directing the Robot Carnival anthology and helming the feature film adaptation of his own Akira manga. His subsequent anime credits include the Memories omnibus, the Gundam: Mission to the Rise event short, and the feature Steamboy. He also contributed to Harmagedon, Roujin Z, Spriggan, Metropolis, Freedom Project, and Hipira: The Little Vampire.
Ōtomo recently founded a new feature animation studio, OVAL GEAR, based in Tokyo. The studio’s debut project is currently in production.
