The live-action film Kujo no Taizai (映画 九条の大罪), based on the manga by Manabe Shohei, has revealed six additional cast members: Kuroki Haru, Narumi Yui, Shibukawa Kiyohiko, Yoshioka Mutsuo, Tokui Yu, and Okuno Eita.
New Cast Roles
- Kuroki Haru — Kujo Kanako, Kujo’s ex-wife, who is raising their young daughter on her own
- Narumi Yui — Ota Rui, a suspect in a dating-app fraud case who hires Kujo as her defense attorney
- Shibukawa Kiyohiko — Mitarai Taketo, a sworn brother of yakuza underboss Kiyoku
- Yoshioka Mutsuo — Karigane, the deputy underboss of the Fushimigumi faction surrounding Mitarai
- Tokui Yu — Kajiya, a former combat-specialist yakuza
- Okuno Eita — Uji, a young rising executive within the organization
Why Kuroki Haru?
Producer Nasuda Jun explained the casting decision, noting that fans of both the original manga and the Netflix series have long wondered what kind of person Kujo’s ex-wife was, and what the family went through. He wanted an actress with the human depth and inexhaustible imaginative range to meet those expectations.
He added that unless audiences come to genuinely like Kanako, it would be impossible to convey just how much Kujo truly treasures his daughter and family. Both characters care deeply about family, yet harbor irreconcilably different feelings that create an unbridgeable distance — something extremely difficult to articulate — and when he tried to think of an actress who could embody that instantly, no one came to mind except Kuroki Haru.
Story and Background
Kujo no Taizai is a crime-entertainment series serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits. It follows Kujo Mahito, a lawyer branded a “corrupt attorney” for taking on only the most troublesome clients — semi-criminal “half-grey” offenders and ex-convicts alike — alongside elite lawyer Karasuma Shinji, who ends up working at his firm.
In the film, the story kicks off when underlings of half-grey leader Mibu (played by Machida Keita) accidentally kidnap the son of yakuza underboss Kiyoku (played by Muro Tsuyoshi), setting off a chain of events that entangles the legal world with the criminal underworld.
A live-action Netflix series adaptation began streaming this past April, with Yagira Yuya as Kujo and Matsumura Hokuto (of SixTONES) as Karasuma — both of whom reprise their roles in the film.
