Story and Background

Set in the late 1980s, Mahōtsukai no Yoru follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a long lineage of modern mages. Despite her indifference toward magic, she is suddenly named the family’s successor and reluctantly begins her apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, a young witch living in a secluded hilltop manor. Aoko juggles her magical training with her duties as student council president, befriends Soujyuro Sizuki, a transfer student with little knowledge of the modern world, and contends with the schemes of her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who believes her birthright was stolen from her.

The story originated as a novel co-created by Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi in the mid-1990s — predating the founding of Type-Moon — and was initially shared only among friends. Type-Moon later adapted it into a full visual novel with artwork by Hirokazu Koyama, releasing it in April 2012 with two sequels planned.

Mahōtsukai no Yoru is considered one of the clearest connective threads in the Nasuverse — the fan term for the shared universe spanning Type-Moon’s works, including Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. An older Aoko Aozaki appears as an early mentor to Tsukihime protagonist Shiki Tohno, while an older Tōko Aozaki serves as employer to Garden of Sinners protagonist Shiki Ryōgi.

Game Versions

A smartphone version of the original visual novel is set to launch on November 20, coinciding with the film’s Japanese theatrical opening. Type-Moon previously brought the game to Steam in December 2023, while Aniplex released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in Western markets in December 2022 — simultaneously with the Japanese release. Combined worldwide sales of the PS4 and Switch versions have surpassed 150,000 copies.
