About the Anime

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is an original TV anime that aired from April to June 2016 on Fuji TV and other channels. It was produced by WIT STUDIO, directed by Tetsurō Araki, with series composition by Ichirō Ōkouchi, original character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto, and music by Hiroyuki Sawano.

Synopsis

As the Industrial Revolution sweeps the world, an immortal plague of monsters called Kabane emerges and spreads with terrifying speed. The people of Hinomoto (a fictional Japan) barricade themselves inside fortress-like stations, connected only by armored steam locomotives known as Hayajiro. A young steam-smith named Ikoma secretly develops a weapon called the Tsuranuki-zutsu to pierce a Kabane’s iron-encased heart. When the armored train Kōtetsujō arrives at Kenkin Station, Ikoma meets a mysterious girl named Mumei who is exempt from Kabane inspections. That night, a hijacked Hayajiro crashes into the station, and Ikoma resolves to fight rather than flee.

Highlights

The series is known for its high-speed action sequences set atop the ever-moving Kōtetsujō, rendered in a richly detailed steampunk aesthetic. The score by Hiroyuki Sawano drives the tension throughout, complemented by the opening theme “KABANERI OF THE IRON FORTRESS” performed by EGOIST and the ending theme “ninelie” by Aimer with chelly (EGOIST).
