The official X (formerly Twitter) account for the Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn) television anime announced on Tuesday that Pierrot Films — the animation brand that Studio Pierrot established in 2024, known for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and Mr. Osomatsu season 4 — will produce the anime’s planned sequel.
About the Manga
The Akatsuki no Yona manga is the work of Mizuho Kusanagi, the creator behind Mugen Spiral, Game X Rush, and NG Life. It launched in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume magazine in 2009 and concluded serialization on December 19. A four-chapter “gaiden” spinoff also wrapped up in Hana to Yume on July 3. The 48th and final compiled volume shipped on Tuesday, while Viz Media released the 46th English-language volume on July 3.
Story Synopsis
Princess Yona lives a sheltered, privileged life as the sole princess of her kingdom — beloved by her father the king, guarded by the loyal Hak, and close to Su-won, the man she loves. Everything shatters on her 16th birthday when tragedy strikes. Forced to flee the palace with Hak, Yona must survive on the run and find a path forward in a world that has turned against her.
Anime and Stage Adaptations
The first Akatsuki no Yona television anime, also produced by Pierrot, premiered in 2014 and ran for 24 episodes. Three original anime DVDs followed in 2015 and 2016. Funimation released the television anime on home video.
The manga has also inspired multiple stage productions: an initial stage play in March 2016, a second in Tokyo in November 2018, a third in Tokyo in November 2019, and a musical stage play in Tokyo in July 2024.
