Paramount+ released the official trailer for its upcoming animated series based on Sega’s iconic Golden Axe video game franchise on Thursday, confirming that the show will premiere on September 16 on Paramount+. The platform change is notable — the series had previously been announced for Comedy Central.
Story
Paramount+ describes the series as a loving homage to Sega’s classic 1989 side-scrolling beat-em up. The story follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to rescue Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder — who just won’t seem to stay dead. Complicating their quest is Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose heroic ambitions far outstrip his actual abilities. Forced to work together despite their individual flaws, the group must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.

Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler serve as co-creators and executive producers on the 10-episode series, produced at American animation studio Titmouse. CBS Eye Animation Productions (a CBS Studios label), Sony Pictures Television, and Original Film are co-producing.
Executive producers also include Sega’s Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, and Toru Nakahara, alongside Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, Ben Kalina, and Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and Toby Ascher.
Golden Axe Franchise Updates
Beyond the animated series, Sega announced an untitled new entry in the Golden Axe game series at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023. The original Golden Axe launched in arcades in 1989 and has remained a beloved franchise ever since — it even inspired a stage play in 2018.
