Crunchyroll has announced a partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring Akira, the iconic anime film directed by Katsuhiro Ōtomo, back to select theaters across the United States and Canada. The screenings are set for September 4 in both 4K and IMAX formats, with the film available in Japanese with English subtitles as well as in an English dub.

Synopsis

The story opens in July 1988, when World War III erupts, then jumps to 2019 in the sprawling megalopolis of Neo-Tokyo. Kaneda, the charismatic leader of a gang of young delinquents, spends his nights racing his motorbike through the urban wasteland against rival crews. One evening, his close friend Tetsuo crashes after a sudden encounter with a mysterious boy — the product of secret human experimentation — and is taken away by a military unit to an army research facility along with the strange child.

Determined to rescue Tetsuo, Kaneda infiltrates the facility, only to discover that the extreme experimental procedures have awakened a terrifying new power within his friend — one that is rapidly driving him toward madness.

About Director Katsuhiro Ōtomo

Ōtomo launched his career as a manga artist with works including Domu, Kibun wa mō Sensō, and Akira — his most internationally recognized title. His subsequent anime credits include the Memories omnibus, the Gundam: Mission to the Rise event short, and the feature film Steamboy. He also contributed to projects such as Harmagedon, Roujin Z, Spriggan, Metropolis, Freedom Project, and Hipira: The Little Vampire.

Most recently, Ōtomo founded a new Tokyo-based feature animation studio called OVAL GEAR. The studio’s debut project is currently in production.
