GKIDS announced on Tuesday that it will bring the original anime film The Last Blossom (Japanese title: Housenka), directed by Baku Kinoshita and written by Kadzuya Konomoto, to U.S. theaters on August 30-31.
Synopsis
A former yakuza named Akutsu has been sentenced to life in prison after spending many years in the criminal underworld. One night, as he lies in his cell waiting for death, he speaks with his only companion: a sharp-tongued flower that has sprouted from a can. Together, they look back on the decisions that brought him to this point, the woman he loved, and a child he sacrificed everything to protect. The question that remains is whether redemption is still possible.
Voice Cast
The protagonist Minoru Akutsu is voiced by two actors at different points in his life: Kaoru Kobayashi as the present-day Akutsu and Junki Tozuka as the younger Akutsu. Likewise, Hikari Mitsushima and Yoshiko Miyazaki both voice Nana Nagata, Akutsu’s partner at different ages. Pierre Taki voices the talking Housenka flower.
Other voice cast members include:
- Hideaki Murata of the comedy duo Toro Salmon as Hayashida, Akutsu’s subordinate
- Hiroki Yasumoto as Tsutsumi, a senior member of Akutsu’s yakuza group
- Soma Saito as Wakamatsu, Akutsu’s junior
- Kota Nakayama as Konishi, Akutsu’s subordinate
Staff and Music
Kinoshita directs the film, while Konomoto is credited with both the screenplay and original concept. Animation production is handled by CLAP, the studio behind works such as Pompo: The Cinephile and The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes. Michinoku-Toge is in charge of concept art, while the score and theme song “Moving Still Life” are composed and performed by the band cero.
Screening History and ODDTAXI Connection
The film opened in Japan on October 10 and was selected for the Feature Film Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2025. Before that, the film had also appeared in Annecy’s Work in Progress program the previous year.
Kinoshita and Konomoto previously worked together on the widely praised 2021 anime series ODDTAXI.
