Story

Goodbye, Lara draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale The Little Mermaid. The story centers on a mermaid who makes a forbidden wish to be loved by a human. After her death, she is reborn 200 years later in modern-day Japan at Lake Biwa, where she must learn to navigate life in the human world.

Lake Biwa is located in Shiga Prefecture — the hometown of director Takushi Koide — lending the series a personal connection to its setting.
