To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the TV anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Niconico Live has announced a special event: a free marathon of two anime seasons totaling 50 episodes across two weeks, beginning June 13, 2026.
About the Series
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is adapted from the sound novel game by Ryukishi07. It is a highly popular horror-thriller work. The first season began airing in 2006, followed in 2007 by Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, which reveals the truth behind the events. The series is known for its unpredictable storytelling and mysteries once described as having only a “1% answer rate,” which has long fueled fan analysis.
The story takes place in June of Showa 58 in the remote village of Hinamizawa. Each year, the village holds a traditional festival called “Watanagashi Day”, and every year one person mysteriously dies while another disappears. The events known as the “Hinamizawa serial murder case” turn the peaceful lives of the characters into tragedy.
7th Niconico Marathon Event
Since 2019, Niconico has held annual marathon screenings of the series around “Watanagashi Day,” which falls on the third or fourth Sunday of June. This year marks the seventh event, timed exactly with Watanagashi Day on June 21, 2026.
In past years, terms related to “Watanagashi Day” have often trended on X, formerly Twitter, in Japan, showing that even after 20 years Higurashi no Naku Koro ni continues to hold fans’ attention.
