The international animation festival Hiroshima Animation Season 2026 has announced its second round of programming. The event runs from August 19 to 23, 2026, at JMS Asterplace Plaza and Yokogawa Cinema in Hiroshima, Japan.
Garo Magazine Special Screening
A highlight of the new program is a special screening exploring how the avant-garde spirit of monthly manga magazine Garo (Seirindō) inspired the world of animation. Three works will be screened:
- Oni Koiuta (鬼恋歌) — original story and direction by Seiichi Hayashi
- Kujira no Chōyaku (クジラの跳躍) — original story and direction by Shigeru Tamura
- Nekojiru-sō (ねこぢる草) — based on the original work by Nekojiru, directed by Tatsuo Sato
A post-screening talk session will feature Seiichi Hayashi in conversation with the audience.
Koji Minamiya Retrospective
Building on the retrospective held at Hiroshima Animation Season 2024, this year’s festival will again spotlight animator Koji Minamiya. The program includes the world premieres of his works Torotto and Megane. A post-screening talk will be held with Maiko Harada of Studio Pierrot / NUNOANI Juku and animation researcher Daisuke Tanaka. Additionally, 20 setting sheets created by Minamiya will be on display throughout the festival.
Character Design Workshop
The festival will also host a character design workshop led by Naoyuki Asano, known as character designer and chief animation director on Osomatsu-san, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Urusei Yatsura, and the Evangelion Broadcasting 30th Anniversary Special, alongside Kazuya Kanehisa, director of the music video for Kocchi no Kent’s “Hai Yorokonde.”
Applications for the workshop are open until July 22 at 5:00 PM. If applications exceed capacity, participants will be selected by the festival committee.
