Singapore-based anime venture studio Kasagi Labo has announced a new project tentatively titled Casshan 2045, a reimagining of Tatsunoko Production‘s classic anime Shinzō Ningen Casshan. The announcement was made during the studio’s panel at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as reported by American animation news outlet Cartoon Brew.
The project features original character design concepts by Yoshitaka Amano, widely known for his iconic work on the Final Fantasy franchise.
Story Synopsis
Tatsunoko Production describes the story as follows:
Dr. Azuma creates robots to benefit mankind, but they unexpectedly rebel and begin to destroy everything in their paths. To deal with the catastrophe, Dr. Azuma’s son volunteers to become a human robot, even though he knows he will never be able to return to human form again. He confronts this grave situation to ensure a bright future for all humans.
The Casshan Franchise Legacy
The Casshan franchise has a long history in entertainment. An animated remake titled Casshan: Robot Hunter debuted in Japan in 1993, followed by a live-action film directed by Kazuaki Kiriya in 2004. In North America, both Streamline Pictures and ADV Films released Casshan: Robot Hunter, while Go Fish Pictures handled the live-action Casshern film.
The most recent anime remake, Casshern Sins, aired in Japan in 2008. Funimation streamed the series with English subtitles and released it on Blu-ray and DVD in North America.
New Casshan Manga Coming in September
Nakama Press, an imprint of Mad Cave Studios, is partnering with Tatsunoko Production to release the first volume of a new Casshan manga on September 15. Written by Mario B. Long (God Tier) and illustrated by Kusanagi, the manga is based on Shinzō Ningen Casshan and follows the titular hero Casshan.
