The production team behind the anime film Kimi to Hanabi to Yakusoku to (You, Fireworks, and Our Promise, abbreviated Kimi-Hana), based on the novel series by Kaori Mado, began streaming a new clip on Friday showcasing protagonist Makoto Natsume.

Cast

Shōri Satō of idol group timelesz voices the protagonist Makoto Natsume, while actress Nanoka Hara — known for Suzume, the live-action Oshi no Ko, and Mieruko-chan — voices heroine Aki Hayama. Rie Takahashi plays the enigmatic “mysterious girl” Haru, and Natsuko Yokosawa voices Makoto’s mother, Yukari Natsume.

Members of idol group AVAMNanami Saiki, Hanaka Kikyō, and Yuka Himemiya — voice classmates of Makoto.

Kei Suzuki, who served as assistant director on City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust and directed Tower of God: Return of the Prince, helms the film at Synergy SP and The Answer Studio. Kōhei Mori penned the screenplay, Yūji Watanabe designed the characters, and Michihiko Umezawa (The Dangers in My Heart, A Couple of Cuckoos) planned and produced the project alongside Shinei Animation. Idol group timelesz performs the theme song “Kienai Hanabi” (Eternal Fireworks).

Story

The coming-of-age romance unfolds against the backdrop of the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Show, one of Japan’s three premier fireworks displays, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Niigata Prefecture each year. Makoto, a socially awkward Tokyo high schooler lacking self-confidence, and Aki, a popular, talented class president, are brought together by a mysterious drawing of fireworks. Caught between the drawing’s secrets and the pull of fate, the two must make a life-changing decision within a very limited time.

Additional Notes

The film was previewed at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival on May 15 as part of the “Tokyo International Film Festival’s Goes to Cannes” event.

The source novel, illustrated by Akamoku (The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero), was published by Shogakukan’s Gagaga Bunko imprint on December 18, 2025. A manga adaptation of the film is also in the works.
