Disney and Square Enix have officially announced the production of an animated series based on the beloved Kingdom Hearts game franchise — marking the very first anime adaptation in the series’ history. Currently carrying the working title Kingdom Hearts, the show will air on Disney Channel and be available to stream on Disney+.
About Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts is a role-playing game series that blends the worlds of Disney and Pixar with original Square Enix characters. The story follows Sora, a chosen hero who wields the Keyblade — a powerful weapon only the chosen can use — as he journeys across various worlds to battle the forces of darkness while forging bonds with his companions. The first game launched in March 2002, and the franchise has since grown to more than 20 titles, including Final Mix editions with additional content.
A Completely Original Story
The series is a co-production between Disney Kids & Family, a division of The Walt Disney Company, and Square Enix. Rather than adapting existing game storylines, the anime will feature a completely new story crafted specifically for this project. Crucially, Tetsuya Nomura — the game director and creative father of the Kingdom Hearts series — will be involved alongside Square Enix’s creative team. The first key visual released shows a mysterious boy holding a Keyblade.

The announcement was made at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026, held in Anaheim, California, beginning August 14 (local time). No official premiere date has been announced yet.
