The autumn anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) Season 3 has released the synopsis and preview stills for Episode 51, “If There Is No Bread”, set to air on Friday, October 16, 2026 across the NTV network’s 30-station simulcast during the FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block.
About the Series
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is based on the light novel series by Hinata Natsu, published under the Hero Bunko imprint (Imagica Infos), which has surpassed 57 million copies sold worldwide. Set against the backdrop of an imperial court, the story follows Maomao, a young apothecary serving as a food taster, as she unravels a series of mysterious incidents using her sharp wit and knowledge of medicine. The series has won fans of all ages and genders both in Japan and internationally, thanks to its compelling heroine, genuine mystery plotting, and richly exotic world-building.
Following Season 1 (October 2023–March 2024) and Season 2 (January–July 2025), Season 3 began airing on October 2, 2026. The new season shifts the stage from the inner palace to the wider city, as Jinshi grapples with his duties as the emperor’s younger brother, a mysterious shrine maiden sows confusion among the people, and ominous signs of a coming disaster loom over the kingdom — bringing fresh trials for both Maomao and Jinshi.
Episode 51 Synopsis — “If There Is No Bread”
Early one morning, a disheveled man arrives at the apothecary and pleads with Maomao to examine his ailing daughter. Reluctantly, she agrees and heads out alongside Ukyou, the head manservant of the Verdigris House, to a run-down shack tucked in an alley near the pleasure district.
Inside, Maomao finds an elder sister slumped weakly and a younger sister utterly exhausted. She learns that the elder sister had given her sibling a baked confection received through begging — but the treat is far too luxurious to have been handed out as alms to a beggar. The incongruity immediately sets Maomao’s instincts on edge.
