The production team behind Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery) — the first entry in a new anime film trilogy — released a new trailer on Friday, along with announcements of additional cast members and the film’s theme song. The film is set to open in Japan on October 23.

The new trailer previews the theme song “Chain of the Abyss,” composed by series mainstay Kevin Penkin and featuring Mori Calliope.

Franchise Background
Kadokawa first announced this sequel project in January 2023, following the second season Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō), which aired from July to September 2022 and concluded with a one-hour finale. The original 13-episode television series premiered in Japan in July 2017, and the theatrical film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul opened in January 2020, earning over 102 million yen in its opening weekend.
Story
In the world of Made in Abyss, a vast pit known as the Abyss is the last unexplored frontier on Earth. Its depths are home to bizarre creatures and priceless relics that modern humanity cannot replicate. Orphan girl Riko lives in the town of Ōrth on the Abyss’s rim, dreaming of becoming a Cave Raider like her mother. During one of her early expeditions, she encounters a robot that looks remarkably like a human boy.
