Twin Engine, the production company behind Nippon Sangoku The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun, announced on Thursday that a sequel to the TV anime — based on Ikka Matsuki‘s manga of the same name — has been greenlit. The company released a short announcement video featuring footage from the first season, though no further details about the sequel have been revealed at this time.
Story
Set in a near-future Japan where civilization has collapsed under the weight of nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance, the country fractures into three rival factions, ushering in a new Three Kingdoms era. Aoteru Misumi, once an unremarkable local bureaucrat, sets his sights on reunifying the nation. Armed with encyclopedic knowledge and extraordinary eloquence, he steadily rises through the chaos — and the legend of the man who would become a prodigious strategist begins.

Kazuaki Terasawa (The Ancient Magus’ Bride season 2, Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26) directed the first anime at Studio Kafka. Takahiko Abiru (The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Vinland Saga) handled character design and served as chief animation director. Teruko Utsumi (Salaryman’s Club, Sarazanmai) wrote the series scripts, Seiki Tamura (The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Ascendance of a Bookworm, K-ON!) served as art director, and Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss, The Apothecary Diaries, Tower of God) composed the score.
Tatsuya Kitani performs the opening theme “Hidane” (Flashpoint), while Leina performs the ending theme “Chikai” (Oath).
Streaming & Broadcast
Amazon Prime Video began streaming the first season on April 5 across more than 240 countries and territories, serving as the exclusive international distributor. In Japan, the series had a pre-release broadcast on U-NEXT on April 6 at 9:00 p.m. JST, followed by a regular broadcast on Tokyo MX, BS NTV, and other stations later that night at 24:00 JST.
About the Manga
Matsuki launched the manga on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE app and Ura Sunday website in 2021. The seventh compiled volume was released on April 10. The series has earned considerable recognition, appearing in Da Vinci magazine’s 23rd annual “Book of the Year,” receiving a nomination at the 16th Manga Taisho awards in 2023, and ranking in the top 20 manga for male readers in the 2023 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi!
