ผู้กำกับ Mamoru Hosoda และนักแสดง Shota Sometani ในงาน Opening Event ของนิทรรศการ 細田守の原点/展

The 「細田守の原点/展」(Hosoda Mamoru no Genten/Ten) — an exhibition tracing the origins of acclaimed anime director Mamoru Hosoda — officially opened on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO in the Kyobashi district of Tokyo. The day before, on Friday, June 19, an opening event brought director Mamoru Hosoda and actor Shota Sometani (染谷将太) to the stage to discuss their respective “origins.”

The Largest Exhibition of Hosoda’s Production Materials to Date

The exhibition centers on three beloved works — The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (時をかける少女), Summer Wars (サマーウォーズ), and Wolf Children (おおかみこどもの雨と雪) — and presents storyboards, layouts, key animation drawings, and background art on the largest scale ever assembled for a Hosoda retrospective. The show also explores the thematic continuity and artistic universality that runs through his filmography up to his latest work, Hateshinaki Scarlet (果てしなきスカーレット).

Visitors can also browse a shop offering more than 100 exclusive exhibition-only merchandise items, and enjoy “OZ Cafe,” a themed café inspired by the world of Summer Wars.

Hosoda Reflects on His Origins for the First Time

Shota Sometani has appeared in four of Hosoda’s films: The Boy and the Beast (バケモノの子), Mirai (未来のミライ), Belle (竜とそばかすの姫), and Hateshinaki Scarlet. At the event, he shared his impressions of working on set with the director and recalled memorable episodes from their collaborations.

With The Girl Who Leapt Through Time marking its 20th anniversary, director Hosoda took the opportunity to look back on the feelings and circumstances that launched his career as a feature film director.

Comments from the Opening Event

Director Mamoru Hosoda: “I have always kept moving forward without looking back at my own work, but this exhibition gave me the chance to revisit my origins for the very first time. I was reminded of how I felt back then — simply wanting to make something good and deliver it to everyone, with no idea what the future held. It is quite embarrassing to show the amateur animation I made in middle school, but because the theme of this exhibition is ‘origins,’ I felt I had to. I hope visitors will think back on their own younger days and enjoy the show in their own way.”

Shota Sometani (actor): “The time I spent being directed by Hosoda was truly one of the happiest of my career. He always listened and embraced me warmly, and I feel as though I grew as an actor through the process of making those films together. His works feel different depending on whether you watch them as a child or as an adult who has children of their own. They capture the changes in people and in the times we live in, which is why they can be enjoyed across generations. This exhibition also lets you touch the very origins of his creativity, and I hope as many people as possible will come and experience it.”
