A new anime based on Kiyono Sachiko‘s iconic picture-book series Nontan is officially in production, with a first visual released to mark the occasion.
Fifty Years of Nontan
The Nontan series follows a cheerful, energetic kitten named Nontan and his circle of friends. First published in 1976, the series celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026 and has sold a cumulative 35 million copies, making it one of Japan’s most beloved children’s picture-book franchises.
New Anime Announced on Nontan’s Birthday
On July 11, 2026 — Nontan’s 50th birthday — the production of a new anime was officially announced. The first visual features Nontan and Hachi-san rendered in 3DCG, with Nontan peeking out playfully from the frame. Further details about the anime are expected to follow in future announcements.
50th Anniversary Exhibition at PLAY! MUSEUM, Tokyo
Alongside the anime news, a special exhibition titled “誕生50周年記念 ノンタン ずっとともだち!!!” (Nontan 50th Anniversary: Friends Forever!!!) is set to open at PLAY! MUSEUM in Tokyo on July 18. The exhibition will include interactive experiences as well as displays of approximately 50 original picture-book illustrations and rough sketches.
