The official Transformers YouTube channel released a new 30-second clip on Thursday from the upcoming 12-minute animated short Optimus Prime: Awakening. The clip is geo-restricted and unavailable to viewers in Japan.

The short is set to screen following the end credits of anniversary theatrical showings of The Transformers: The Movie in a new 4K re-release presented by Fathom Entertainment and Hasbro.

Peter Cullen’s Final Performance

The short marks the final voice performance of the late Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. Cullen passed away on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 85. Frank Welker voices both Megatron and Soundwave.

Josh Wassung directs from a script by Ryan Parrott. Bobby Krlic is composing the score, and The Third Floor is handling animation.

Release Dates and Territories

The 4K theatrical re-release opens on September 17 across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Germany, France, Singapore, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Peru. Select U.S. theaters will offer collectible popcorn buckets and drinkware.

About The Transformers: The Movie

Fathom Entertainment describes the film as follows: for millennia, the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), have waged war against the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron (Frank Welker). As their battle rages on Earth, a far greater threat emerges — Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles), a colossal planet-sized transformer that devours everything in its path, is headed for Cybertron. The only hope lies in the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Facing new enemies and dangers across the galaxy, the Autobots embark on a perilous mission that will alter their destiny forever.

Background

Fathom and Hasbro previously brought the film back to U.S. theaters in September 2021 for the franchise’s 35th anniversary. That same year, Shout! Factory released a 35th anniversary steelbook edition — the first time the film was presented in 4K UHD, sourced from a brand-new transfer of the original 35mm print.

The 1986 film was animated by Toei Animation as a sequel to the early television seasons of The Transformers, itself based on Hasbro’s toy line, which drew from Takara‘s Diaclone and Microman toy ranges.
