About the Franchise
The original 1983 Armored Trooper Votoms anime is a landmark of the “real robot” mecha subgenre, depicting mass-produced military machines with realistic operational limitations and telling gritty, grounded stories about the true cost of war. The story unfolds near the end of a century-long war between the Gilgamesh Confederation and the Balarant Union, centering on protagonist Chirico Cuvie, an elite Gilgamesh VOTOMS pilot who becomes entangled in a massive conspiracy that brands him a traitor and leads him to a mysterious woman.
The franchise has spawned numerous spinoffs, including The Last Red Shoulder, Big Battle, Armor Hunter Mellowlink, Red Shoulder Document – Roots of Treachery, Pailsen Files, The Heretic Saint, and Alone Again (2011), the most recent entry prior to these new films. Section23 Films’ Maiden Japan label released the original series on Blu-ray Disc in 2019 and 2020.
