Studio Khara, the Japanese animation studio behind the Evangelion franchise, has been announced as a production partner on BAAHUBALI: THE ETERNAL WAR PART 1 (working title), an animated feature film set within the universe of the beloved Indian Baahubali film series. Concept art created by Studio Khara has also been released alongside the announcement.

Highest-Budget Animated Film in Indian History

Boasting the largest production budget ever committed to an Indian animated feature, BAAHUBALI: THE ETERNAL WAR PART 1 is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in 2027. The story picks up after the events of the live-action films, following Amarendra Baahubali — the slain king — as he journeys into the afterlife and becomes embroiled in a cosmic war between the gods (Deva) and the demons (Asura).

The film is directed by Ishan Shukla, known for his work on Star Wars: Visions Season 2, with a screenplay by Scott Mosher, whose credits include The Grinch. The production brings together elite studios from around the world, including crew members from the Spider-Verse series.

Studio Khara’s Role

Studio Khara is responsible for producing a portion of the film’s animation segment. The key staff for that segment are as follows:

  • Animation Segment Director: Akira Honma
  • Character Design: Noriko Ito
  • Main Staff: Masahiro Maeda, known for Shin Evangelion Theatrical Version

Planning and production of Studio Khara’s animation segment is handled by Slowcurve (Japan).
