The tokusatsu film 「大長編 タローマン 万博大爆発」 (Daichōhen TAROMAN: Banpaku Daibakuhatsu) is set to screen nationwide in Japan once more starting Saturday, August 22, 2026 — the exact one-year anniversary of its original theatrical debut.
From Late-Night TV Cult Hit to Big-Screen Phenomenon
The film is an adaptation of 「TAROMAN 岡本太郎式特撮活劇」, a late-night series that aired on NHK Eテレ. Presented in the style of “a tokusatsu hero show broadcast in the 1970s,” the series fused the world of celebrated artist Okamoto Tarō with classic tokusatsu aesthetics, spreading rapidly through word of mouth before making the leap to cinemas.
Story
The story begins in 1970, when a terrifying monster from the future attacks the Expo grounds. The narrative then leaps from 1970 to 2025 — envisioned through a Shōwa-era lens as a gleaming future city filled with geometric architecture, cars gliding through transparent aerial tubes, and a metropolis in communication with outer space. It is in this retro-futuristic dreamworld that TAROMAN wages his battles.
A Smash Hit That Packed Cinemas
When the film opened last year, fans who had followed the TV series flocked to theaters, with many screenings selling out quickly thanks to word of mouth. Participatory “ōen jōei” (cheer screenings) drew cosplaying families, male film enthusiasts, and even casual female viewers in their twenties, broadening the audience well beyond the core fanbase.
