The official website for the Though I Am an Inept Villainess (Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga – Sūgū Chōso Torikae Den) television anime — based on Satsuki Nakamura‘s light novel series — dropped a teaser promotional video on Friday for the show’s second cours, subtitled the “The First Royal Outing” arc. The second cours is set to premiere in January 2027.

Story
Set in a kingdom inspired by historical China, five clans each present a maiden as a candidate for imperial consort — but only one will be crowned empress. Kou Reirin, the delicate and beautiful “butterfly” of the imperial court, seems destined to wed the crown prince. But when Shu Keigetsu — the so-called “court rat” — attacks her during the dazzling Lantern Festival, Reirin wakes up in the dungeons. Body-swapped by her assailant to steal her place at court, her situation looks dire to everyone else — but not to Reirin herself. Armed with a sturdy new body, not even the threat of execution can slow her down.

Yoshiko Nakamura (Detective Conan: Zero’s Tea Time; Tadaima, Okaeri; The Helpful Fox Senko-san) handles series scripts, and Ai Kikuchi (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, New Game!, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie) is the character designer.

Broadcast & Streaming
The first cours premiered on TV Tokyo and affiliates on July 12 — delayed from an originally planned April debut due to production issues. Netflix began streaming in Asia on the same date, while Crunchyroll carries the series across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent. TOHO launched an English dub on July 25 via Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Disney+, with the dub also available on Netflix in Asia.
Theme Songs (Part 1)
Singer-songwriter milet performed the opening theme “Sunny”, while Rokudenashi performed the ending theme “Shooting Star” (Hōkiboshi).
Source Material
Nakamura’s light novel series, illustrated by YukiKana, launched under Ichijinsha in December 2020, alongside a manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji serialized in Monthly Comic Zero-Sum. The series entered its final arc, “Hoshi ni Negai o” (Wish Upon a Star), with the 13th light novel volume on September 30. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes both the novels and manga in English under the title Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court; the manga’s ninth volume shipped August 4 and the novels’ 11th English volume released September 22.
