Toei Animation announced on Saturday that it is producing a new anime film based on Leiji Matsumoto‘s Galaxy Express 999 franchise. Veteran anime director Rintarō — known for Metropolis, X/1999, and Harmagedon — is responsible for the original story draft. Rintarō is no stranger to the franchise, having previously directed the 1979 Galaxy Express 999 theatrical film, its sequel Adieu Galaxy Express 999, and the Galaxy Express 999: Emeraldas: The Eternal Warrior special.
About the Franchise
Galaxy Express 999 originated as an 18-volume manga by Matsumoto, serialized from 1977 to 1981. It was adapted into a 113-episode television anime series that aired from 1978 to 1981, and the franchise has since expanded to include multiple films, specials, and OVAs. The story follows Tetsuro, a young orphan who travels across the galaxy aboard a space train alongside the mysterious Maetel, seeking a cybernetic body. The train’s stops at various planets along the way lead the pair into a series of adventures.
Losses Within the Franchise
Masako Ikeda, the voice of Maetel throughout the franchise, passed away on March 3 at the age of 87. Franchise composer Nozomi Aoki also died on February 20 at the age of 94.
Manga Retelling and 50th Anniversary Exhibition
Yuzuru Shimazaki‘s manga Ginga Tetsudō 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey — a retelling of Matsumoto’s original story — launched in Akita Shoten’s Champion RED magazine in March 2018 and concluded its run on February 19.
A Leiji Matsumoto exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of Galaxy Express 999 has been touring Japan since June 2025, with stops in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Aichi already completed. The exhibition is set to visit Saitama in the future.
