July 20 marks Marine Day (海の日), one of Japan’s national holidays, and streaming platform ABEMA is marking the occasion by spotlighting three anime series where the sea takes centre stage — perfect for soaking up that summer coastal atmosphere.

ONE PIECE is based on Eiichiro Oda‘s manga, which has been serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997 and remains ongoing. The story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a rubber-bodied young man who ate a Devil Fruit, as he sails the high seas alongside his Straw Hat crew in pursuit of the title of King of the Pirates. The series’ sweeping sense of adventure, richly varied islands, and the deep bonds forged between crewmates have kept audiences captivated for decades.
Love Live! Sunshine!! — Idols by Suruga Bay
Love Live! Sunshine!!, the second TV anime entry in the Love Live! franchise, began broadcasting in 2016. Set in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the series follows nine students from Uranohoshi Girls’ High School — led by Takami Chika — as they form the school idol group Aqours and chase their individual dreams.
Alongside vibrant live-performance sequences, the anime showcases the picturesque coastal scenery of Suruga Bay and the charming atmosphere of a harbour town. The real-life locations in Numazu became a popular pilgrimage destination for fans across Japan.
Grand Blue (ぐらんぶる) — Diving, Drinking, and Campus Chaos
Grand Blue (ぐらんぶる) is a comedy adapted from the manga written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka, serialised in good! Afternoon. The story centres on Iori Kitahara, a university freshman who moves to the seaside town of Izu and quickly gets swept up in the wild campus life surrounding the Grand Blue diving shop.
The series delivers stunning visuals of crystal-clear waters and the underwater world, while its raucous party scenes among college students became a talking point in their own right. The blend of laugh-out-loud comedy, genuine camaraderie, and youthful energy has earned Grand Blue a devoted fanbase.
