Summer 2026 anime Yani Neko aired its seventh episode, titled “Nyaa mo Oya kara Umareta nya” (“Even Meow Was Born from Parents”), on 13 August 2026. Viewer reactions ranged from “another gloriously trashy week” to “Yani Neko gave me energy today,” and the episode certainly delivered on every front.

The Nicotine Demon

Yani Neko dozes in her fly-infested, garbage-strewn apartment when her tail accidentally knocks over an ashtray, scattering cigarette butts into a magic circle. A Nicotine Demon materialises, vowing to “dye the world in ash and tar” — but the state of the apartment immediately unnerves it. A bowl of leftover ramen, a banana peel that sends it sprawling, and finally a blast of gas from Yani Neko herself prompt the demon to wail “I hate this house! I’m going home!” and vanish. Viewers breathed a collective sigh of relief that the world had been saved.

Dispatch Agency: Kemono-te Co., Ltd.

On the advice of her junior Yaku Neko, Yani Neko visits the beastman dispatch agency Kemono-te Co., Ltd. and lands a factory floor-cleaning job. The catch: the work requires full protective gear and a strict no-fire policy due to flammable materials. During a break, a fellow temp vents about the poor pay and hard conditions — and the moment she asks Yani Neko for her opinion, Yani Neko calmly lights a cigarette. Viewers could only shake their heads.

Yaku Neko’s Black Hair

Yaku Neko returns from her grandfather’s first-year memorial service with her hair dyed from gold to black. Yani Neko barges into her room demanding cigarettes and finds her crying alone in the dark. When Yaku Neko tearfully asks, “Senpai, why do people…,” Yani Neko cuts her off with “You’re not a person.” Harsh as it sounds, many viewers noted that Yani Neko’s continued presence was itself a form of care.

Yani Neko’s Mother, Shizue

Back at the family home, Yani Neko catches up with her mother Shizue over cigarettes — Shizue asks for one but pockets two and smokes both simultaneously. Younger sister Imoko arrives and is furious to find smoking in the no-smoking house, but the family soon makes peace and heads to the cinema together. In the world of Yani Neko, movie theatres apparently have smoking sections, which left viewers genuinely startled.

Aru Neko and Imoko

Twenty-four-year-old perpetual student Aru Neko — two years behind schedule — is scolded by her professor over health check results and nearly hit by a truck before Imoko pulls her to safety. Imoko mistakes the petite Aru Neko for a primary-school child and walks her home hand-in-hand. When Imoko shares a story about being bullied as a kid — and the bully confessing his feelings at graduation — Aru Neko deadpans: “Is that a humble-brag disguised as a sob story?” before stopping at a convenience store for alcohol. Viewers found the unlikely pairing unexpectedly charming.

The Legendary Centaur Scene

Aru Neko’s alcohol withdrawal shakes the building so violently that neighbours mistake it for an earthquake. The landlord, similarly fooled, rushes outside mid-activity — only to find himself unable to get back into his room. The resulting pose had viewers in hysterics, instantly dubbing it “the legendary centaur episode.” Fortunately, manga artist O●npo Tatsuro (real name: Tatsuno Saori) happened to walk by and, drawing on her professional experience, read the situation with uncanny accuracy and saved the landlord from social ruin. Viewers praised her as “surprisingly level-headed.”

Note: Yani Neko broadcasts in two versions — the standard on-air version and the uncut “Jaryuu Kaihou” version available on AT-X and select streaming services including Netflix, which presents scenes as the creators originally intended.

Jikaki Neko’s Isekai Novel

Jikaki Neko brings a new web novel — ostensibly written by a friend — for Yani Neko to read. The story follows the popular “banishment” template from the fiction site “Kakeyome,” except the protagonist is the one doing the banishing. When Yani Neko points out the formula is backwards, Jikaki Neko is genuinely shocked she got it wrong.

Penpen Neko and the Landlord’s Big Heart

Penpen Neko, who has been secretly living in the apartment garden, is discovered by the landlord — who promptly declares her family and offers her a proper space to stay. A warm moment follows, until an ill-timed gust of wind causes an incident that leaves Penpen Neko horrified and the landlord in an embarrassing state.

Shedding Season

During the spring/autumn moulting season, O●npo Tatsuro enthusiastically grooms Yani Neko, having far too much fun. She removes so much fur that the episode inadvertently answers the long-running fan question of whether beastmen have human ears underneath.

Cast and Staff Reactions

Natsuyoshi Yuko (voice of Yani Neko) wrote on social media: “It was a heartfelt episode full of family love! Love makes everything okay! Yaku, next time let’s catch dragonflies together.”

Matsuoka Misato (voice of Yaku Neko) commented: “Because the world was saved in the opening scene, all the wonderful stories that followed could happen — I’m glad.” She also noted: “The landlord and ‘the landlord’s landlord’ really stole the show this episode! I can’t believe there was still a wild episode like this left!”

Director Kimura Taku revealed: “We somehow managed to get this episode on air! (We had people drawing mosaics right up to the delivery deadline.) I strongly recommend the Jaryuu Kaihou version!” He also confirmed that the eyecatch voice belongs to original creator Nyan Nyan Factory. The music video for the opening theme “Nanmo Nee” has also been released.
