Anime director and animator Yūji Yanase passed away on August 22. The official website for The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for The Throne — the anime he was directing at the time of his death, which premiered on July 6 — made the announcement.

A Career Built Over Decades

Yanase had been active in the anime industry since at least 1988, beginning as an in-between animator on productions such as Akira, Kaze o Nuke!, and Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Dorabian Nights. He later worked as a key animator on titles including Macross 7, The Legend of Zorro, Tenchi Universe, and Tetsujin 28-go FX.

His credits as animation director span a wide range of beloved series, among them Saber Marionette J, Fancy Lala, Excel Saga, Hellsing, Chobits, Mezzo, Aria the Animation, and Symphogear, alongside many others.

Directorial Career

Yanase made his directorial debut with the 2014 television anime Himegoto. He went on to direct a string of series, including:
