Hakusensha’s seinen manga magazine Young Animal Issue 12 (2026) went on sale Friday, June 12, 2026, headlined by a long-awaited new chapter of the dark-fantasy epic Berserk. The installment marks the first of three consecutive monthly appearances for the series — a welcome change after a period of irregular scheduling.
A Legend Continued
Berserk began serialization in Monthly Animal House in 1989 before moving to Young Animal, all under the pen of creator Kentaro Miura. Set in a brutal world of swords, sorcery, and demons, the series follows the harrowing journey of its protagonist, Guts. After Miura’s passing in May 2021 prompted a hiatus, the manga resumed in June 2022 under a new collaborative credit: original work by Kentaro Miura / art by Studio Gaga / supervised by Tsunehiro Mori.
What Awaits Guts in the Darkness?
The new chapter runs as the lead color feature of Issue 12, the most prominent slot in the magazine. Its central question: sealed inside a shrine and swallowed by darkness, what will Guts witness?
Supervisor Tsunehiro Mori announced the chapter on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account, offering a candid look at the creative struggle behind it:
“This episode is one that Miura agonized over for twenty years — I heard about it from him dozens of times. Even so, it was incredibly difficult for me too… We went back and forth many times checking the dialogue with Shimada-san, the editor from that era who was a long-time mentor to both Miura and me, before we finally got there.”
