Kadokawa has officially announced a television anime adaptation of The Fake Alchemist (Nisemono no Renkinjutsushi), the manga series written by Jirō Sugiura and illustrated by Umemaru. The announcement was accompanied by a commemorative trailer and a teaser visual. Studio Passione is handling animation production.

Story

Set in the city-state of Orichalconia — a world where alchemy and magic are woven into the fabric of everyday life — the reincarnated Paracelsus quietly makes his living as an alchemist while carefully concealing his extraordinary “cheat skills.” His peaceful existence is upended when he enters into a contract with Nora, a shaman slave-girl, and subsequently encounters Coco, an elf who has lost all four limbs and all five senses.

What starts as a modest rescue attempt in a small workshop to save Coco gradually spirals into a sweeping conflict drawing upon alchemy, sorcery, the fabric of space, and even the gods themselves. Originally an indie sensation, the manga surpassed 1 million copies in its commercial print run in Japan before earning its long-awaited anime adaptation.

Messages from the Creators

Writer Jirō Sugiura shared his reaction:

“I am surprised, thinking to myself, ‘To think the day would come when The Fake Alchemist becomes an anime…’ This is entirely thanks to everyone who has supported us. Thank you very much! I would be happy if you enjoy it.”

Artist Umemaru added:

“The anime adaptation of The Fake Alchemist has been announced! Thank you very much! I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Sugiura-sensei, everyone involved with the work, and the readers who have supported us. As the person in charge of the manga art, I am very happy that this beloved work will have new life breathed into it by the hands of the wonderful staff. As a fan of The Fake Alchemist, I am looking forward to the day when I can enjoy the anime together with everyone.”

Both creators also drew special illustrations of the character Nora to mark the announcement.

Manga Publication Details

Sugiura and Umemaru launched the manga on Kadokawa’s KadoComi website in June 2023. The series is ongoing, with the fifth compiled volume released on February 20. Kadokawa distributes the manga digitally in English, while Yen Press handles the print edition — the second volume is scheduled for release on June 23.

Sugiura is also the creator of My Wife Has No Emotion, serialized in Kadokawa’s Comic Flapper magazine since 2019, though the series has been on hiatus since November 2024. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes that manga in English, and its television anime adaptation premiered in July 2024.
