First Penguin Requiem (ファーストペンギン・レクイエム), a new manga series by Tadano Natsu, launched its first chapter on Kurage Bunch, the web manga platform of publisher Shinchosha, on June 30.
Story
Supernatural entities known as kaii lurk unseen in the depths of the world. Two girls — Kongō Azu and Hara Kinoko — are members of the Special Disaster Inspection Institute (特災査閲院 / SIA), tasked with investigating a kaii that appears nightly and repeatedly commits murder at a certain school.
The pair methodically search the building floor by floor, making it to the third floor without incident — only to discover that the staircase behind them has somehow become submerged underwater, cutting off their escape.
The series centers on the girls of the Vanguard Unit (先導隊 / Leaders), a squad that functions as a de facto disposable force, perpetually on the razor’s edge between life and death.
Comic Bunch 25th Anniversary
Alongside the new series launch, Comic Natalie has organized special features to mark the 25th anniversary of Comic Bunch, including a two-person interview between Inoue Junya and Kanzaki Yuya, as well as a three-way discussion among horror manga creators Yuritaro, Nebukuro, and Paregoric. Both conversations reflect on Bunch’s history and look ahead to the future of the magazine and its editorial team.
