The official website for the Spirited Away stage play — adapted from the beloved anime film by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli — has announced a sweeping international tour set to visit multiple cities across Asia, North America, and Europe between 2026 and 2028.

Creative Team
The production is directed and co-adapted by John Caird, a Tony and Olivier Award-winning director and Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, known for Les Misérables, Nicholas Nickleby, and Daddy Long Legs. He co-adapts the script alongside Maoko Imai.
Previous Runs and Awards
The stage play previously ran at the London Coliseum from April to August 2024, where it went on to win the Best New Play award at the 25th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards in 2025. In Japan, the production’s first run opened at the Imperial Theatre from February to March 2022, followed by a national tour to Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Nagoya for a total of 102 performances. A second Japanese run followed in August 2023 and March 2024.
GKIDS also brought recorded performances of both Japanese cast versions to North American cinemas in 2023.
Legacy of Spirited Away
Spirited Away was once the highest-grossing Japanese film worldwide before being surpassed by Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train. It remains a landmark in animation history as the first — and for over two decades, the only — non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, an honor it received in 2003. That distinction was finally shared when Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron won the same award in 2024.
