GKIDS began streaming an English-subtitled trailer on Thursday for cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood (cocoon Aru Natsu no Shōjo-tachi Yori), the anime adaptation of Machiko Kyō‘s Cocoon manga.
The anime made its North American premiere on July 10 at this year’s JAPAN CUTS festival, and its Canadian premiere is currently screening at the 30th annual Fantasia International Film Festival.
In Japan, the anime first aired on BS-NHK in March 2025, followed by a broadcast on NHK General in August — arriving 80 years after the end of World War II, a milestone that mirrors the manga’s own publication in 2010, which came 65 years after the war’s end.

Story
Set on a lush tropical southern island, the story follows San and her best friend Mayu, students at the island’s prestigious all-girls school. When war reaches their country, the students are drawn into the war effort and eventually into caring for the wounded behind the front lines. As the conflict grows ever more brutal, San and Mayu watch their friends disappear one by one.

Machiko Kyō’s Other Work
Kyō also published the manga Mitsuami no Kami-sama in Shueisha’s now-defunct Jump X (Jump Kai) magazine in 2013; Shueisha released the single compiled volume that same year. The manga won an award at the 18th Annual Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize in March 2014 and inspired a 28-minute short anime film, Pigtails, produced by Production I.G. The short made its international debut at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival in April 2016, winning the Platinum Remi Award in the Classic Cel Animation category, and later took the Diamond Award in the Animated Film category at the 2016 California Film Awards.
