The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), running September 10–20, will screen the North American premiere of the live-action adaptation of Look Back, the one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The festival will announce its full schedule on August 11.
The film opens in Japanese theaters on September 11. GKIDS is set to release it theatrically in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland in 2026.

The film previously screened at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival on May 15.
The Anime Film’s Success
The anime adaptation of Look Back opened in Japan in June 2024, debuting at #2 in ticket sales but #1 in weekend earnings. It sold 135,000 tickets and grossed ¥227 million (approximately US$1.40 million) in its first three days. GKIDS brought the anime to North American theaters in October 2024, where it earned US$688,253 in its opening weekend.
About the Original Manga
Fujimoto debuted the Look Back one-shot on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ in July 2021, amassing over 2.5 million views on its first day. Viz Media and MANGA Plus released an English digital version, and Viz Media published a print edition in September 2022. The story is described as follows:
The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.
Fujimoto is also the creator of Chainsaw Man, which launched in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018. Its first part — the “Kōan” (Public Safety) arc — concluded in December 2020, while the second part, “Gakkō-hen” (School Arc), began on Shonen Jump+ in July 2022 and wrapped up on March 24 (March 25 in Japan).
