The final cour of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War — subtitled 「-Kashintаn-」 — continues to dominate anime conversation. Episode 42, “SON OF DARKNESS,” which aired on August 1, became an instant talking point thanks to the long-awaited bankai reveal of Urahara Kisuke.
Background: A Manga That Became a Legend
BLEACH is the sword-and-soul battle manga by Kubo Tite, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. It follows Kurosaki Ichigo, an ordinary teenager who gains the powers of a Soul Reaper and is drawn into the conflicts of the Soul Society. The TV anime launched in October 2004 and has produced over 360 episodes alongside four theatrical films. The final series, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, began airing in October 2022 and has earned widespread praise for its stunning animation and anime-original sequences.
Episode 41 Recap
Last week’s Episode 41 covered Shihōin Yoruichi’s awakening of her 「Raijū Senkei」 form, Urahara’s tactical reversal, and the reunion of Ichigo and Uryū ahead of their decisive battle. Urahara’s timely arrival to save Yoruichi drew a flood of reactions: “Too cool!” and “He stole every single scene!”
The Bankai Arrives: Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame
In Episode 42, Urahara finally activates his bankai: 「観音開紅姫改メ (Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame)」. Fans erupted online — “Urahara’s bankai is HERE!!!”, “Been waiting for this!”, and “The shock I felt reading the manga just came rushing back!” were among the most common reactions.
The bankai’s core ability can be described in one word: reconstruction. Upon activation, a colossal female figure materializes behind Urahara, granting the power to “remodel” — essentially stitch together and restructure — anything it touches. The unsettling yet majestic visual design drew enormous praise: “The direction is breathtaking,” “It’s eerie and divine at the same time — gave me goosebumps,” “Inexplicably cool,” and “The BLEACH animation team are genuine geniuses.”
Grimmjow Saves the Day
Even with his bankai unleashed, Urahara cannot finish off Askin Nakk Le Vaar, who lands a near-fatal blow and seemingly seals Urahara’s fate — until Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez appears from behind and drives his fist through Askin’s chest.
This, it turns out, was all part of a contingency plan Urahara had arranged in advance. Fans responded with delight: “Just how many moves ahead does Urahara think!?”, “The combo of Urahara’s strategy and Grimmjow’s single strike is perfection!”, and “This is BLEACH at its finest!” Grimmjow’s reappearance alone prompted waves of “I’ve been waiting for this!” comments.
