NHK World JAPAN, the international broadcasting arm of NHK, is set to launch a brand-new programme called “SCHOOL OF J-POP” on 21 August. The debut episode will shine a spotlight on the anime feature film Cho Kaguya-hime! (超かぐや姫!), which has been generating buzz around the world.

A New Window onto Japanese Music Culture

“SCHOOL OF J-POP” is designed to introduce Japanese music culture to a global audience. Each episode picks a Japanese work, artist, or song as its theme, with New York-based MC Naomi Watanabe leading the conversation alongside foreign guests who share a passion for that episode’s topic.

For the premiere, the programme has enlisted anime content creator group Trash Taste — well known for their deep knowledge of anime and manga — to discuss the appeal of the music featured in Cho Kaguya-hime!

Trash Taste Share Their Thoughts

All three members of Trash Taste commented on the experience after filming:

  • The Anime Man: “It’s a really fun film, and I was so happy to have the wonderful opportunity to talk about it with fans and specialists who love anime just like us. Thank you for such a fun and wonderful shoot!”
  • Gigguk: “Getting to work with everyone at NHK was a truly amazing experience. I feel very honoured to have had the chance to share our perspective on the growing popularity of anime overseas and the passion of its fans.”
  • CDawgVA: “It was such a wonderful time talking about the film. Honestly, I didn’t expect to connect with it so deeply, but by the end I was full of happy tears and smiles. I’m really looking forward to everyone seeing our conversation!”

Where to Watch

“SCHOOL OF J-POP” will be available via NHK World JAPAN’s video-on-demand service for viewers outside Japan. A terrestrial broadcast on NHK within Japan is also planned.
