With World Beer Day — held every year on the first Friday of August — falling on 7 August 2026, Anime!Anime! ran a reader poll asking: “Which anime character suits beer the most?” Voting ran from 15 to 22 July 2026 and drew 116 responses. The male-to-female split was roughly even; respondents aged 19 and under made up about 20%, while those in their 20s and 30s each accounted for around 25%.
No. 1 — Kogoro Mouri from Detective Conan (名探偵コナン)
The former police detective turned private investigator topped the poll with approximately 12% of the vote. Although his deductions are often wide of the mark, Conan’s behind-the-scenes help has made him famous as the “Sleeping Kogoro.” Readers noted that on case-free days he can reliably be found on the sofa, beer in hand, watching horse-racing broadcasts — much to the exasperation of Conan and Ran.
One reader wrote: “The image of him grinning from ear to ear with beer foam clinging to his magnificent moustache is just too iconic.” Another recalled the episode “Bubbles, Steam, and Smoke,” in which Conan uses Kogoro’s tip that “adding salt to flat beer revives the foam” — a trick Kogoro apparently picked up during his broke student days — to break a suspect’s alibi.
No. 2 — Sakata Gintoki from Gintama (銀魂)
The freelance jack-of-all-trades and owner of Odd Jobs Gin earned around 8% of the vote. Gintoki is best known for his sweet tooth, but he is equally fond of alcohol and has a habit of causing chaos when drunk. Fans highlighted his all-night drinking sessions with friends that end in two-day hangovers, and the times he has blacked out and made spectacular mistakes. “I’d love to have a drink with Gin-san just once,” one reader said, summing up the affection for his very human flaws.
No. 3 — Katsuragi Misato from Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン)
NERV’s no-nonsense Operations Director finished a close third. At work Misato is cool and commanding, but at home a very different side emerges. The scene of her pulling a can of beer from the fridge and draining it in one go with a satisfied “Puhaaa~” is one of the most recognisable moments associated with her character.
“A fridge stocked with nothing but cans of beer says everything about Misato-san’s lifestyle,” one reader observed. Another noted that the brand of beer shown on screen varies between the TV series and the theatrical films — a detail they found endearingly deliberate.

- Arc from Skeleton Knight in Another World — Despite being a skeleton, the sight of him gulping down beer with obvious relish during his travels is apparently contagious enough to wash away the viewer’s own fatigue.
- Matsuzaka-sensei from Crayon Shin-chan — In the 1998 film Dengeki! Buta no Hizume Daisakusen, she drinks beer on a houseboat and belts out Miyuki Nakajima’s “Hitori Jouzu” in tears, terrifying Shin-chan and his friends.
- Itou Kaiji from Kaiji — His tearful cry of “It’s ice cold… I’m so grateful…” upon tasting beer for the first time in a month while trapped in an underground labour camp is considered one of anime’s most memorable drinking moments. The latest live-action film, Kaiji: Life Revenge Game, has also been announced.
- Dad (Otousan) from Atashin’chi — Permanently associated with beer in fans’ minds, despite a brief flirtation with wine.
