Fans of classic anime have something to look forward to: Hikaru no Go, the beloved series that sparked a go (board game) boom across Japan during the Heisei era, is set to stream in its entirety on ABEMA for the first time. All 75 episodes will be broadcast free of charge across a special event window running from August 13 to 18, 2026.
About Hikaru no Go
Hikaru no Go is based on the manga written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The story follows Hikaru Shindo, an elementary school student who becomes possessed by the spirit of Fujiwara no Sai, a brilliant go player from the Heian period. Driven by Sai’s deep passion for the game and spurred on by encounters with the young prodigy Akira Toya, Hikaru gradually awakens and hones his own remarkable talent for go.
Despite centering on a board game unfamiliar to many general audiences, the series won over fans of all ages — well beyond the typical manga readership — thanks to its dynamic storytelling and richly drawn characters. The TV anime aired from October 2001 to March 2003, spanning 75 episodes in total.
