Bandai Namco Entertainment took the stage at Sony’s State of Play on Thursday to unveil a new trailer for Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, the action RPG based on Reki Kawahara‘s long-running franchise. The presentation also brought the official announcement of the “Genesis Maidens” DLC.
Genesis Maidens DLC
The DLC introduces a brand-new storyline set across new areas spanning Floors 1 and 2 of Aincrad. Its headline addition is Mito, a character from the Sword Art Online: Progressive films, who joins the playable roster. The DLC also adds the Curved Sword weapon type and an armor enhancement system. It is scheduled to launch this winter.
Release Details
The base game launched in Japan on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, followed by a PC (Steam) release on July 10. Western markets received the game across all platforms on July 10. The theme song, “Live to Survive,” is performed by Aimer.

- Standard Edition — the base game.
- Deluxe Edition — includes the expansion DLC, a starter item pack, and early access to the “Death Game” mode (a permadeath mode that normally unlocks only after completing the game once).
- Ultimate Edition — everything in the Deluxe Edition, plus the “Unanswered//butterfly” bonus app/special anime, a digital soundtrack, a digital artbook, and an in-game armor pack.
- Aincrad Edition — exclusive to the Bandai Namco Store; includes all Deluxe and Ultimate Edition content alongside physical collectibles: a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and a sticker pack.
“Unanswered//butterfly” Special Anime
Bundled with the Ultimate and Premium Editions, the promotional special anime “Unanswered//butterfly” follows side characters during the events of the original Sword Art Online story.
About Sword Art Online
Reki Kawahara first published the Sword Art Online web novel in 2001, serializing it on his personal website through 2008. Dengeki Bunko (Kadokawa) began releasing a revised print edition in 2009. The original story concluded with the “Alicization” arc in the 18th volume in 2016, after which the series continued with the all-new “Moon Cradle” arc in 2017 and “Unital Ring” in 2018, now spanning 29 volumes. The franchise has spawned manga and novel spinoffs, a multi-season TV anime, an anime film, and a proposed live-action series. The Sword Art Online: Progressive spinoff novels have also been adapted into two anime films.
