The production team behind the television anime adaptation of Satsuki Nakamura‘s light novel series Though I Am an Inept Villainess (Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga – Sūgū Chōso Torikae Den) announced on Sunday that the second cours, titled the “The First Royal Outing” arc, will premiere in January 2027. The announcement also included a new key visual and additional cast members for the upcoming arc.
New Cast Members
- Yūichi Nakamura as Keikou, Rerien’s eldest brother
- Shunichi Toki as Keishou, Rerien’s second-eldest brother
- Chiaki Kobayashi as Unran, the young leader of a village
Story
Set in a kingdom inspired by historical China, five clans each present a maiden as an imperial consort, with only one destined to become empress. Kou Reirin, the delicate and beautiful “butterfly” of the imperial court, seems all but certain to wed the crown prince — until Shu Keigetsu, the so-called “court rat,” attacks her during the Lantern Festival. Reirin wakes up in the dungeons, her body stolen to usurp her place at court. Yet rather than despair, Reirin embraces her new, robust body and refuses to let even the threat of execution slow her down.
Seven Seas Entertainment publishes both the light novels and manga in English under the title Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court.
Staff and Music
Mitsue Yamazaki (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) directs the anime at Dōga Kōbō. Yoshiko Nakamura (Detective Conan: Zero’s Tea Time, Tadaima, Okaeri, The Helpful Fox Senko-san) oversees series scripts, and Ai Kikuchi (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, New Game!, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie) handles character design.
Singer-songwriter milet performs the opening theme “Sunny,” while Rokudenashi performs the ending theme “Shooting Star” (Hōkiboshi).

Broadcast and Streaming
The first cours premiered on TV Tokyo and its affiliates on July 12. Netflix began streaming in Asia on the same date, while Crunchyroll carried the simulcast across North America, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent. TOHO launched an English dub on July 25 via Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Disney+, with the dub also available on Netflix in Asia. The premiere had originally been scheduled for April but was pushed back to July due to production delays.
Source Material
Ichijinsha launched Nakamura’s light novel series, illustrated by YukiKana, in December 2020. A manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji launched simultaneously in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Zero-Sum. The 12th light novel volume was published on March 31, and the series will enter its final arc, “Hoshi ni Negai o” (Wish Upon a Star), with the 13th volume on September 30. Seven Seas released the manga’s ninth volume on August 4 and will release the light novels’ 11th English volume on September 22.
