The Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026 (Kyomaf), now in its 15th year, hosted a special stage event for the original TV anime Kaze wo Tsugu Mono at Rohm Theatre Kyoto South Hall. The three lead voice actors appeared on stage in traditional kimono: Sakuma Daisuke (as protagonist Tachikawa Jinsuke), Kaji Yuki (as Okita Soji), and Uchiyama Kouki (as Hijikata Toshizo), performing to a full house.

About the Series

Kaze wo Tsugu Mono is a joint production by Aniplex, Live2D, and Drive, depicting the fleeting youth of young men living through a turbulent era. The series is directed by Kawamura Tomohiro, written by Narui Yutaka, with music by Kishida Shigeru, and employs Live2D technology to create an entirely new visual style for a period drama anime centered on the Shinsengumi.

Broadcast & Theatrical Dates

The TV anime is set to begin airing in January 2027 on CBC/TBS across 28 stations nationwide in the “Agaru Anime” slot (Sundays at 23:30). Ahead of the TV broadcast, a theatrical advance screening version titled Kaze wo Tsugu Mono: Hajimari will open on Friday, November 13, 2026 for a two-week limited run.

Stage Highlights

Sakuma, attending Kyomaf for the first time, said he was very excited and hoped to convey the appeal of the work to as many fans as possible. Kaji, serving as the official “Oshikoyasu Ambassador” for Kyomaf 2026, expressed his delight at holding a Shinsengumi-themed stage event in Kyoto itself. Uchiyama encouraged the audience to enjoy the event to the fullest.

Given the Shinsengumi’s deep ties to Kyoto, the production has collaborated with Kyomaf in multiple ways, including a collaboration visual depicting Jinsuke, Okita, and Hijikata taking selfies at Konkai Komyoji Temple; acrylic stands and pin badges; collaboration food at the venue’s Character Cafeteria; a digital stamp rally and special exhibition; in-venue announcements voiced by the three characters; and a wrapped train on the Karasuma Line toward Takeda station.

New Information Revealed

The second Cast PV was screened on stage, with the actors sharing warm anecdotes from the recording sessions. A key visual for the theatrical version was also unveiled, along with news that advance movie tickets (Mubichike) will go on sale both at theaters and online.

The stage also saw the world premiere of the theatrical trailer, followed by the announcement of the official theme songs:

A new cast addition was also announced: veteran actor Kamikawa Takaya, who was active in the theatrical company Caramel Box — founded by series writer Narui Yutaka — will appear as a guest star voicing Umeda Shinbei.

Stage greeting events with cast members are scheduled for November 13 (Friday) and 14 (Saturday).

Finally, a collaboration was announced for early 2027 at shrines and temples in Tokyo and Kyoto associated with the Shinsengumi, featuring original goshuin (temple seal stamps) designed with characters from the series, merchandise sales, and life-size panel displays.

Closing Remarks

Uchiyama reflected that while the series is rooted in history, even he couldn’t predict the final shape of the work, as the atmosphere and character relationships were built up through ongoing discussions between staff and cast during recording. He invited fans to enjoy the journey together.

Kaji said he feels fans are gradually coming to understand the series’ unique take on the Shinsengumi, and expressed his excitement for everyone to see the full story.

Sakuma closed by saying he gave everything in the recording booth so fans would come to love each character, and expressed his hope that the series would carve a new page of Shinsengumi history in the hearts of its audience.
