The story follows Sasaki, a worn-out 45-year-old salaryman, and Yamada/Tayama, a quirky 24-year-old supermarket employee, who gradually open up to each other over cigarettes behind the store. The anime adaptation, which began airing July 9, 2026, is directed by Suzuki Masato and Mori Aoi, produced by Asahi Production, with Sato Takuya voicing Sasaki and Hoshiki Naruka voicing Yamada/Tayama.

A Finale Full of Emotion

The final episode opens with the perennial complainer Suzuki grumbling on the first day back at work. The moment the opening theme played for the last time, fans flooded social media with “Don’t end…” and “How can I already feel this empty just from the OP?” — even voice actress Hoshiki Naruka posted that the opening alone brought her to tears.

The episode’s central conflict revolves around Sasaki becoming visibly distracted after receiving an email from Nakajima, a former boss who once gave him a wristwatch and is now reaching out before his retirement. Sasaki refuses both Suzuki’s offer to swap a Hokkaido business trip and Nakajima’s invitation, insisting he caused more trouble than he received help. Fans urged him online: “Just go see him!” and “He reached out because he wants to see your face.”

Director Suzuki revealed on X that “the final conversation was left entirely to the two of them,” confirming the scene was fully improvised. Hoshiki Naruka called the team’s decision to animate their ad-libs “an act of true love,” while Sato Takuya said he “felt no pressure at all — the studio was filled with truly wonderful people.”

Post-Broadcast Reaction

After the broadcast, original manga creator Jinushi and the main cast all posted heartfelt thank-you messages, and the series trended on X. Fans declared it “the best three months,” said they “cried so much,” and thanked the team for “such a happy time.” Calls for a second season were immediate and overwhelming: “Season 2… please…” and “I’ll wait as long as it takes.” Whether Sasaki and Yamada will meet again behind the supermarket remains to be seen.
