The fall 2026 anime season arrives with more than 70 new titles, and one of the most anticipated is Hotaru no Yomeiri (ホタルの嫁入り) — a dark Meiji-era romance that blends obsessive love, forbidden contracts, and samurai action into a story that’s impossible to look away from.

About the Source Material

Hotaru no Yomeiri is based on the manga by Oreko Tachibana, serialized in Shogakukan’s “Manga ONE” and collected under the “Manga ONE Comics” label. The series has sold over 5 million copies in total and won the grand prize at the Digital Comic Awards 2024. The manga concluded in January 2026 with 12 volumes. Tachibana is also known as the creator of Promise Cinderella and served as character designer for the TV anime Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de.

Story

The story is set in the Meiji era, a time when Japan was rapidly modernizing — yet women were still treated as little more than family property. Satoko Kirigaya, the daughter of a count, was born into privilege and beauty, but carries a congenital heart condition that doctors say will claim her life before long. After losing her mother, she lives with her father, stepmother, and half-sister. Her one dream is to marry into a good family, protect the Kirigaya name, and make her beloved father proud.

One night, Satoko is abducted as part of someone’s scheme, with the yakuza of Tenjoshima — led by a man named Saegusa — hired to carry it out. At the scene is Shinpei Goto, a young assassin who grew up on Tenjoshima and makes his living by killing. Cornered and desperate, Satoko blurts out a lie: “Marry me and you’ll have everything.” It’s a spur-of-the-moment contract proposal meant only to buy her life.

What she doesn’t expect is that Shinpei takes every word at face value. He becomes utterly convinced she is his destined partner and begins pouring out a love that is sincere, relentless, and more than a little unhinged. Satoko, meanwhile, finds herself torn between her duty to her family and feelings that keep tilting toward Shinpei. A lie told to survive becomes the foundation of a love neither of them can escape.

Why You Should Watch

The central hook of Hotaru no Yomeiri is the sheer wrongness of its central relationship — an assassin whose love is dangerously heavy, and a countess with a ticking clock. A line Shinpei delivers in the teaser PV — “I know my love is a lot, but I’ll make you happy” — perfectly captures the show’s coexistence of madness and sincerity.

Readers of the manga have consistently praised its pacing, its balance of serious drama and comedy, and its sharply drawn characters. Shinpei in particular dominates fan discourse, described variously as “yandere,” “obsessive,” and “love that’s way too heavy” — all of which appear to be selling points rather than warnings.

Beyond the romance, Shinpei’s sword-fighting sequences are also a highlight of the source material. With david production — the studio behind the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series — handling animation, expectations are high that the action will be rendered with the same kinetic energy the studio is known for.
