To coincide with Japan’s Sports Day (Sports no Hi) on October 12, streaming platform ABEMA has spotlighted a special lineup titled “5 Youth Sports Anime That Will Set Your Heart on Fire.” All five titles revolve around ball sports — volleyball, basketball, tennis, American football, and baseball — and share themes of friendship, rivalry, and youthful determination.
Haikyuu!!
Based on the volleyball manga serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump, Haikyuu!! follows Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama as they pour everything into the sport as members of Karasuno High School’s volleyball club. The 2024 theatrical film Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle surpassed ¥20 billion in worldwide box-office revenue. Two more projects are slated for 2027: the film Haikyuu!! VS The Little Giant and the special anime Haikyuu!! Bakemono-tachi no Yukutokoro.
Kuroko no Basket
Also adapted from a Weekly Shonen Jump manga, Kuroko no Basket centres on Tetsuya Kuroko — the phantom sixth man of the undefeated middle-school dynasty known as the “Generation of Miracles.” Teaming up with powerhouse newcomer Taiga Kagami at Seirin High, Kuroko aims for the national championship using his near-invisible presence as his greatest weapon. The series spawned both a TV anime and theatrical films.
The Prince of Tennis
The Prince of Tennis, drawn from the manga that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump and other publications, stars Ryoma Echizen, a prodigy who won four consecutive American junior titles before joining the prestigious Seishun Gakuen middle-school tennis club. The latest instalment, Shin Tennis no Ouji-sama U-17 WORLD CUP Kessen Member Kettei-sen, is currently airing. ABEMA streams new episodes every Saturday at noon, with the most recent episode available free for one week.
Eyeshield 21
Adapted from the Weekly Shonen Jump American football manga, Eyeshield 21 follows timid high-schooler Sena Kobayakawa, whose extraordinary speed is discovered and put to use on the gridiron. Beyond its nail-biting match sequences, the series stands out for tackling a sport rarely depicted in anime.
Major
Based on the baseball manga from Weekly Shonen Sunday, Major chronicles the entire baseball life of Goro, the son of a professional player — from little league through middle and high school all the way to the pros — making it one of the most sweeping sports sagas in anime history.
ABEMA’s curated lineup offers fans the perfect way to celebrate Sports Day with five of the most beloved youth sports anime ever made.
