The Animation Japan Association (AJA) has reported that the global anime market expanded by 15.8% in 2025, reaching a record high of 4.45 trillion yen.
Domestic vs. Overseas Markets
Breaking down the figures, the domestic Japanese market reached 1.91 trillion yen (approximately US$12.1 billion), representing 14.1% growth. The overseas market outpaced it at 2.54 trillion yen (approximately US$16.1 billion), growing at a faster clip of 17.2%.
2025 marks the fourth year in which the overseas market has exceeded the domestic one — the previous instances being 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic), 2023, and 2024.
How AJA Measures the Market
AJA’s calculation of the global anime market encompasses revenues from television, film, home video, and streaming, as well as merchandising, music, events, concerts, overseas licensing, and other related sources. The association draws a distinction between this broader market figure and the smaller subset of revenues that flow directly to animation production companies.
Studio Revenue on the Rise
For production studios specifically, overseas business accounted for 27.9% of total revenue — an increase of 25.5% compared to 2024. Overall revenues returning to production outfits rose by 8% in 2025.
Masahiro Hasegawa, editor-in-chief of the AJA Anime Industry Report 2025, noted that a growing number of production companies are taking equity positions in their own works, retaining intellectual property (IP) rights in order to directly share in overseas revenue streams.
Part of Japan’s Broader Export Strategy
Anime forms a key component of the Japanese government’s five-year action plan to double annual overseas entertainment sales from an estimated 10 trillion yen (about US$65 billion) in 2028 to 20 trillion yen (about US$130 billion) in 2033 — equivalent to 3.7 times the 6.044 trillion yen (about US$39 billion) recorded in 2024.
Full Report Due in December
AJA is scheduled to publish the complete Anime Industry Report 2026 in early December. The association also serves as one of the principal sponsors of the AnimeJapan convention.
