To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Detective Conan TV anime, the special episode “Case No. 30 Murder” — previously streamed on YouTube at the end of last year — will air as a two-hour television special on Kinro (Friday Road Show) on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 9:00 p.m., broadcast nationwide on the Yomiuri TV / Nippon TV network.

About Detective Conan

Detective Conan is a mystery manga by Gosho Aoyama, serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday. The TV anime has been on air since January 1996, making 2026 its landmark 30th year. The theatrical film series, including the latest entry Detective Conan: Highway’s Fallen Angel, continues to break box-office records annually.

Story Synopsis

As Japan buzzes over the release of a new ¥10,000 note featuring the design of “Toto Tower,” Conan, the Junior Detective League, Dr. Agasa, Ran, and Sonoko visit the National Printing Bureau’s Nagano plant. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police Department discovers counterfeit bills at a murder scene and sets up a special investigation unit. With the news of fake currency spreading panic across the country, Conan and Heiji head to Osaka, believed to be the source of the forgeries. The national crisis triggered by the new-banknote counterfeiting scheme is tackled by the largest all-star cast in the franchise’s history.

Ikeda was born in 1996 — the same year the Conan anime began airing. She described the voice-recording experience as both nerve-wracking and deeply meaningful, noting that she has grown up alongside the series. She also jokingly challenged viewers to try saying “counterfeit bill (nisesatsu)” quickly.

Guest announcers Natsumi Kawade (NTV) and Hina Masuda (ytv) also appear in the special, both likewise born in 1996.

Comments from Staff

Director Fumiaki Kamanaka

Kamanaka noted that the episode pits Conan, Kogoro Mouri, Heiji Hattori, and detectives alongside police from departments across Japan against the counterfeiting case, and encouraged viewers to look forward to Sakurai’s script.

Scriptwriter Takeharu Sakurai

Sakurai said he wanted the anniversary special to feel like a “festival,” so he chose a nationwide counterfeiting case that would allow as many regular characters as possible to participate. He blended the mystery genre with theatrical-film-style action, and humorously admitted he has not yet seen the finished product himself — saying he looks forward to watching it together with the audience.

Director Taiichiro Yamamoto (“Murder on Island 31”)

Yamamoto revealed the concept for the viewer-participation episode had been in his mind for over 20 years, inspired by a drama called Armchair Detective. He said the project was approved as part of the 30th-anniversary lineup, and that he aimed for “zero correct guessers” — though he admitted he was worried whether that goal had been achieved.

30th Anniversary Lineup

Following the broadcast of “Case No. 30 Murder,” the official Conan YouTube channel will stream a special program from 6:30 p.m. The broader anniversary lineup from September onward includes:

  • Netflix Special Selection: From September 5 at 8:30 p.m., Netflix will exclusively stream 30 curated episode collections organized by popular character — including Conan, Ran, Shinichi, and Kaito Kid — serving both longtime fans and newcomers.
  • HIKAKIN Collaboration: Popular YouTuber HIKAKIN will co-watch and provide commentary on all 42 episodes of Season 1 in a binge-watch anime commentary format on HikakinTV during Silver Week.
  • Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026: September 19–20 in Kyoto, featuring Edogawa Conan greeting events on both days.
  • Yokohama Fireworks Show: November 21 at Yamashita Pier, Yokohama — an entertainment show fusing classic Conan opening and ending theme songs with fireworks, as a special thank-you to fans.
  • “Secret Conan SHOW” 2-Hour Special: A collaboration between Detective Conan and the TV program Himitsu no Kenmin SHOW Goku, scheduled to air around December. Details to be announced later.
  • “Murder on Island 31” (三十一島の殺人): A first-ever viewer-participation original anime for the franchise, scripted by Takahiro Okura (who wrote “The Human Bird Contest Bombing Case”) and directed by Taiichiro Yamamoto.
