Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures announced on Thursday that Akihito Yoshitomi‘s classic manga Eat-Man is getting a brand-new anime project titled EAT-MAN The Over Order. Along with the announcement, the company unveiled a super teaser video, a teaser visual, the core staff lineup, and confirmed that Masashi Ebara will reprise his role as protagonist Bolt Crank, continuing from the two previous anime adaptations.
Staff and Studio
Shunji Ōga — known for directing Romance of Three Kingdoms, several Soreike! Anpanman films, and serving as chief director on Golgo 13 — will helm the new production at Studio Cab. Original manga creator Yoshitomi is handling scripts and original character designs, while Satoshi Hirayama (Cat’s Eye season 2, Lupin III specials, Lupin III vs. Detective Conan The Movie) will adapt those designs for animation.
Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures had first hinted at the new project on September 4.
About the Original Manga
Yoshitomi serialized the original Eat-Man manga from 1996 to 2002. Viz Media published a portion of the series in North America. The story centers on Bolt Crank, a man with the unique ability to eat any object and then reproduce it from his right hand. The manga previously received anime adaptations in 1997 and 1998. Bandai Entertainment released Eat-Man ’98 on DVD with an English dub, while Discotek Media released both anime on subtitle-only DVD. Crunchyroll began streaming both series in 2019.
Sequel Manga and Other Works
In May 2014, Yoshitomi launched Eat-Man The Main Dish in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine. The six-volume sequel manga concluded its serialization in 2019.
Among Yoshitomi’s other works, ADV Manga published his Ray manga, and Section23 Films released both the Ray television anime and the Blue Drop anime based on his manga of the same name. He also drew Cyborg 009 Vs. Devilman: Breakdown, the manga adaptation of the Cyborg 009 Vs. Devilman crossover anime, which shipped as a single compiled volume in April 2016.
