The long-awaited first theatrical film for Chiikawa — Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (“Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island”) — is set to open on July 24, 2026, and the release month is officially here. To mark the occasion, a wave of events and announcements has been set in motion.
FNS Kayousai Performance Tonight
On July 1, Fuji TV’s FNS Kayousai music special, airing from 18:30 JST, will feature a massive gathering of Chiikawa characters. Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi will be joined by movie characters Shimajiro and Seirene, as well as fan-favourite TV anime characters including Momonaga, Kurimanju, Rakko, Shisa, and the used-bookstore owner.
The highlight of the appearance is the world-premiere live performance of the film’s opening theme 「くつずれ」(Kutsuzure), sung by Hachiware alongside the Suginami Children’s Chorus. It’s a collaboration exclusive to this broadcast.
“Chiikawa Summer Comes” Day on July 3
On July 3, the production team will hold a full-day event called “『映画ちいかわ』の夏が来るDAY” (“The Summer of Chiikawa the Movie Has Arrived Day”), during which six major pieces of information will be revealed throughout the day, beginning with the TV anime broadcast in the morning. The day will culminate at 20:00 JST with a world-exclusive premiere of a special new clip from the film on the Toho Movie YouTube channel.
Additional scene cuts from the 90-second trailer — which generated significant buzz when it dropped on June 1 — have also been released alongside this announcement.
Fans can also look forward to major feature spreads in Nikkei Entertainment! (on sale July 3) and Da Vinci magazine (on sale July 6).
About Chiikawa
Chiikawa is a manga by illustrator Nagano, serialised on X (formerly Twitter) since 2020. The series follows the everyday lives of Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and a cast of charming characters through stories that are by turns cheerful, bittersweet, and surprisingly intense. It has earned fans across all age groups and was inducted into the Japan Character Award Grand Prix Hall of Fame. The TV anime, which began airing in 2022, has surpassed 400 million views on YouTube worldwide.
The film adapts the acclaimed “Seirene Arc” — one of the most distinctive and popular long-form storylines in the series. It is directed by Oikawa Kei and produced by studio Saipic, known for its high-quality animation work on Umamusume Pretty Derby: New Generation’s Gate. Nagano serves as full supervisor on the project.
