A collaboration between 攻殻機動隊 THE GHOST IN THE SHELL (Ghost in the Shell) and the traditional Japanese craft of raden-zaiku (螺鈿細工) — mother-of-pearl inlay — has produced a stunning made-in-Japan mechanical wristwatch. The Fuchikoma model is set to go on sale on July 31, 2026.
A Franchise That Defined Cyberpunk
Since Shirow Masamune first published the original manga in Young Magazine Zoukan Kaizokuban (Kodansha) in 1989, the Ghost in the Shell series has grown into one of the most influential cyberpunk franchises in the world, spanning Mamoru Oshii‘s landmark 1995 animated film, multiple anime series, and a Hollywood live-action adaptation.
The franchise continues with a brand-new TV anime season, 攻殻機動隊 THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, set to premiere in 2027. Science SARU is handling animation production, with a cast that includes Maaya Sakamoto as Kusanagi Motoko, Kazuhiro Yamaji as Aramaki Daisuke, Hiroki Yasumoto as Batou, Yuichi Nakamura as Togusa, Kosuke Goto as Ishikawa, Toru Nara as Saito, Marie Ooi as the Operator, and Tomoko Kaneda as Fuchikoma.
Traditional Craft Meets Cyberpunk Iconography
The watch draws its central concept from the word “Shell” in the title — a reference to the gittai (prosthetic body) theme at the heart of the series. Artisans selected raden, a technique using the iridescent nacre layer of shells, to decorate each dial by hand. Because every piece is finished individually, no two watches share exactly the same appearance.
The dial reproduces a front-facing view of Fuchikoma rendered in raden inlay. An open-heart complication at the right arm position reveals the movement beneath, evoking the motion of the mech’s manipulator arm. The hour indices are styled after Fuchikoma’s wheels, while the hands echo the shape of its arms. A see-through caseback displays the 攻殻機動隊 THE GHOST IN THE SHELL logo.
