TOHO has begun streaming a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the upcoming Godzilla film from Takashi Yamazaki, shot in the 1.43:1 aspect ratio native to IMAX screens.
Release Dates and Global Rollout
The film opens in Japan on November 3, a date that coincides with the national holiday Culture Day and marks the anniversary of the original Godzilla‘s theatrical debut on November 3, 1954 — a date now celebrated as Godzilla Day. The previous film, Godzilla Minus One, likewise opened in Japan on November 3, 2023.
In North America, GKIDS and TOHO will release the film on November 6, making this the first time a Japan-produced Godzilla film has opened in Japan and North America within the same week. A simultaneous launch is also planned across Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand, with additional international dates to be announced later.
Godzilla Minus Zero is also notable as the first Japanese film to qualify for the “Filmed for IMAX” designation. TOHO acquired GKIDS in October 2024.
Cast and Crew
The core cast from Godzilla Minus One returns in full: Ryūnosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Noda, Yūki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, Sakura Andō as Sumiko Ota, and Miō Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta.
Joining the cast as a new addition is Min Tanaka (known from 47 Ronin and the live-action Rurouni Kenshin films), who plays biologist Kanji Murakami.
Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter, and VFX supervisor, with composer Naoki Satō also back on board. Production is underway at TOHO Studios, with ROBOT producing and Shirogumi Inc. overseeing visual effects.
The Legacy of Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla Minus One has grossed over US$116 million worldwide, including an estimated US$57.1 million in the United States alone, making it the third highest-grossing foreign-language film in the U.S. as of 2024. The film won the Best Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards in March 2024 — the first Japanese film ever to win in that category and the first Godzilla film to receive an Oscar nomination.
The film and its black-and-white version, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, are currently streaming on Netflix worldwide. In Japan, both versions stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
Yamazaki’s Next Project
Beyond Godzilla Minus Zero, Yamazaki’s first English-language feature, Grandgear, is set to open on February 18, 2028.
